The AU Art Collection serves the students and staff of the University, and the wider community in Athabasca, Alberta, and Canada. It celebrates creative cultural expression by collecting, preserving, and displaying works of art that reflect the University's commitment to cultural and historical research, teaching and learning, and community engagement. The AU Art Collection nurtures an inspirational, positive environment that supports the arts and the artistic community.
The collection includes the work of Canadian and international artists working at local, provincial, and national levels with a special emphasis on Western Canadian and Indigenous art. The term "art" includes film, video and new media, pottery and glass, textiles, painting, drawing and sculpture, and installation. The collection develops an awareness of past and current aesthetic practice.
Art work from Athabasca University's art collection can be viewed in Edmonton and Calgary public offices and in public spaces on the Athabasca campus. From time to time, juried art shows are presented in the Academic Research Centre on the Athabasca campus.
